Build your own creations are all the rave these days. From build your own tacos, nachos, salads, hamburgers, hot chocolate, etc., the concept is taking over parties everywhere. So for the Packer playoff game this weekend, we took this idea creating a build your own gourmet grilled cheese sandwich party. It was fun, easy, and entertaining.
My husband and I were put in charge of bring the selection of bread. Of course, we chose two varieties from Breadsmith which were the roasted garlic and multigrain as well as the homemade bread I made on New Years (see recipe here-updated with pictures). All three were good choices, but I feel the roasted garlic and homemade bread stood out as top runners.

Then there were the toppings! Roasted red peppers, sauteed onions, spinach, bacon, ham, pickles, and tomatoes.
Of course no grilled cheese is complete without cheese. There were four varieties: American, swiss, provolone, and cheddar. Maybe next time we can add a few softer cheeses like goat cheese, havarti, or gouda? Yum!
The condiments included mayonnaise, butter, spicy mustard, and yellow mustard. You could really go crazy with some other additions.
Once it was time to assemble, everyone got involved. Even my two year old was engaged in the process. She made a cheddar and bacon sandwich–the two ingredients she recognized from the masses. Most made a sandwich to share with the group so that everyone was able to try the unique creations. One of my favorites was a sandwich with provolone, sauteed onions, roasted red peppers, spinach, and mayonnaise on homemade bread. Also, the cheddar, tomato, bacon, mayonnaise sandwich on roasted garlic was very good. Some got as creative as mixing several cheeses together which made for a tasty combination.
Overall, I’d say this was a successful party not just because the Packers won, but the food was a hit too. Give it a try for your next gathering or maybe even the game this weekend.
Please feel free to comment below with some of your favorite build your own food parties. I always welcome new ideas!
